Name: Dr Valerie Hope
Occupation: Retired – previously a lecturer in music education at Leeds University
Position: Youth Training Band Conductor
History: I joined the band in 2001 when millennium funding was awarded to the band for the training of new players. I had no previous experience of brass bands at all but I played viola, piano and several early music instruments as well as having conducted orchestras and choirs. My research was in perception and performance of beat in 4-5-year-old children and my interest has always been music education. Learning to play the cornet as a mature adult was a challenge but amazingly useful as an educator; I was back to being a beginner with all the frustrations and embarrassments of learning to play a new instrument.
